About the Georgia Chapter

The American College of Physicians was founded in 1915 to facilitate "scientific intercourse among physicians in internal medicine." Since then, the ACP has grown to 124,000 members and is the largest medical society after the AMA and the leading voice in the country for internal medicine and internal medicine subspecialists. Its diverse activities include education, ethics, standards, guidelines of practice, information, informatics, and public policy positions. Some of its most visible activities are Annals of Internal Medicine, ACP Journal Club, the Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program (MKSAP) with 30,000 subscribers, its Ethics Manual and practice guidelines, and the Washington legislative office. In 1998, the ACP merged with the American Society of Internal Medicine.

There are 74 chapters. The Georgia Chapter has been active since 1974 and now has over 3,000 members, including internal medicine residents (Associate members) and medical students. Our Chapter activities include an annual scientific session and chapter meeting, an Associates competition, medical student clubs and programs, an associates' corner, and active committees. These activities are coordinated by the Governor who serves four years and is on the Board of Governors which advises the Board of Regents.

Medical student programs include free membership, a student newsletter, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, reduced costs for subscriptions and manuals, and free attendance at Chapter and National meetings. In Georgia, over 600 students are members. Nationwide, there are over 23,000 student members.
